The Craft

A tradition carried
across the Himalayas

Nepal's carpet tradition was transformed in the early 1960s with the arrival of Tibetan refugees, who brought with them centuries of expertise in hand-knotting — an art imbued with spiritual and social significance, from simple grass cushions to ornate temple coverings.

Traditional Nepalese carpet designs were deeply rooted in Buddhist symbolism — dragons, tigers, lotus flowers and auspicious symbols that held cultural and ceremonial meaning. Over the years, design patterns evolved to incorporate contemporary arts and a variety of styles, while the weaving process itself has never changed.

"When you purchase a Nepalese carpet, you're not just buying a rug — you're supporting centuries-old traditions and the livelihood of skilled artisans."

Each carpet is crafted knot by knot using natural dyes and premium Himalayan wool, ensuring both durability and beauty. The entire process is 100% handmade, relying on the skills of artisans rather than heavy machinery — a sustainable approach that protects both the weavers and the environment.

Today, these carpets effortlessly blend modern ideas with traditional workmanship. At नेपाली गलैंचा पसल, every piece in our Kapan showroom tells this living story.

From Wool to Room

The journey of
every carpet

Each piece passes through six stages of craftsmanship before it reaches your home.

01
Himalayan Wool Sourcing
Premium wool is sourced from Tibetan highland sheep — naturally resilient, lustrous, and warm. Some pieces incorporate hand-spun silk for added sheen.
02
Natural Dyeing
Artisans use plant-based and mineral natural dyes — pomegranate, indigo, madder root — producing colours that deepen beautifully over decades.
03
Design & Cartoning
Each pattern — whether a traditional dragon, lotus medallion, or custom design — is mapped out knot by knot on graph paper before weaving begins.
04
Hand Knotting
Master weavers tie each individual knot by hand on a vertical loom. A single square metre can take days of concentrated work, with 80–100 knots per sq. inch.
05
Washing & Finishing
The finished carpet is washed with clean Himalayan water, sun-dried, then hand-clipped to an even pile — bringing the motifs into sharp, lustrous relief.
06
Quality & Delivery
Every piece is inspected for knot consistency, colour fastness, and pile evenness before it reaches our Kapan showroom — ready for your home.
